John Green – The Fault in our Stars

I’ve been an avid reader for all my life (almost 25 years, y’all!). I thought it might be fun to share some tips now and then, because well. Might as well share, right?

I love reading all kinds of books. Mostly young adult stuff, fantasy, crime novels. Dystopian such as the Hunger Games or Divergent. I try to stay away from non-fiction because well. It defeats the – my – whole purpose of reading. Fiction for me please!

John Green’s The Fault in our Stars though is quite a realistic story but brought in such a way that it just completely pulls you in. It deals with youngsters fighting cancer but the whole feeling of the story is one of optimism and humour.

The writer has a very contemporary way of writing, he knows what to write and does it in such a way that I and a lot of my friends can relate. It is, just as Jane Austens novels, a story written in such a way you can see when it was written. The language is real and yet used so that it recalls all kinds of emotions.

The story is narrated by Hazel, a sixteen-year-old with a very rare type of cancer with slim chances of longtime survival. Her parents make her attend a support group where she eventually meets August Waters, a boy who lost a leg to the horrible disease. A stunning story follows, of love and survival, of fitting in and finding yourself.

I think that a big part of this book’s brillance is because of its characters. Hazel is a very bright and witty booklover. August is another amazingly written character, and matches Hazel perfectly. They go through their tough journeys together, sharing sadness and beauty. It is not your typical ‘cancer story’ though through the incredibly honesty and amazing use of hope and heartbreak it is a great reflection on the meaning of life and the fleetingness of it all.

If you’re not into reading, the book is being made into a movie. I’m not one for watching a movie without reading the book first but if you’re not a bookworm, the movie might be a good alternative.

Do I have you convinced? ^^
